January 13, 1998 – A 37 year old worker was crushed
and died of the injuries when the roof of a penthouse of a shopping mall being
demolished collapsed in Sudbury.
February 1998 – No fatalities.
March 2, 1998 – A worker on a project in Cochrane fell approximately
3 metres from a pier of a bridge under construction and became impaled on
protruding rebar and died as a result of the injuries.
March 3, 1998 – A worker engaged in the raising of a barn in Guelph was crushed
and died as a result of the injuries when the barn collapsed.
April 10, 1998 – A 39 year old worker died on April 10 as a result of
injuries sustained on April 8 when he severed a main artery in his leg when he cut
himself with a skill saw while working on a Deck of a residence in
Scarborough.
April 30, 1998 – A 23 year old worker died as the result of injuries
sustained when the boom of concrete pump truck collapsed and struck the
deceased on a barn under construction in Logan Twp., London area. He was
working from a ladder when the boom struck him knocking him to the ground.
May 30, 1998 – A worker succumbed to severe burns received while
spraying rubberised coatings on a foundation on a project in Timmins. The
deceased was purging hoses that contained thinners when a leak occurred
spraying him with the thinner which were ignited by a heater in the trailer
that he was working in at the time.
June 1, 1998 – One worker was electrocuted and died as a result
of the injuries and two other workers were injured when a CB antenna they were
removing from a house contacted an overhead power line rated at 7200 volts. The
project involved the installation windows and siding on a house in Temiskaming.
June 17, 1998 – A 31 year old electrician engaged the installation of a
new transformer switch at an office complex in Ottawa was electrocuted when
his head came in contact with a lug energised at 600 volts.
July 7, 1998 – A 39 year old Engineering Technician was working on a
road construction project in the Lindsay area. She was kneeling at the edge of
the road taking grades when she was run over by a crawler dozer and died
of the injuries sustained.
August 6, 1998 – A worker, part owner of a roofing company, fell 8'
1" from the roof of a cottage he was engaged in roofing and sustained fatal
injuries in the Thunder Bay area.
August 7, 1998 – A worker engaged in the erection of structural steel
was crushed causing fatal injuries when a steel beam fell from the forks
of a fork lift on a project in Brampton.
August 26, 1998 – A 24 year old worker was struck by a train
while installing fibre optics on a project in Rainy (Northern Ontario).
August 27, 1998 – A worker on a road reconstruction project on the 401
in the Windsor area was struck by a passing motorist and sustained fatal
injuries.
September 9, 1998 – A 46 year old project supervisor was struck and
killed by a reversing concrete supply truck on a project in Toronto.
September 17, 1998 – A 39 year old roofer fell 20 feet to the
ground while removing debris from evestroughs after re roofing a residence in
Ottawa.
September 24, 1998 – A 40 year old apprentice electrician was electrocuted
while working on or around a live 347 volt installation feeding a lighting
system at an industrial establishment in St. Thomas.
September 29, 1998 – A 24 year old worker engaged in the construction of
an industrial building in Stratford was electrocuted when a scaffold
mounted on wheels approximately 30 feet in height rolled into an overhead
transmission line rated at 115,000 volts.
October 13, 1998 – The owner of a company was observing his son removing
trees with the use of a back hoe when one of the trees struck him in the
leg. The deceased succumbed to a blood clot in the leg.
October 16, 1998 – A 30 year old worker was electrocuted while
moving an extension ladder that contacted an overhead electrical conductor on a
residential project in Peterborough.
October 27, 1998 – The operator of a long box dump truck was crushed
when the truck tipped onto him while dumping a load of asphalt grindings from a
road resurfacing project in Dunville.
November 5, 1998 – A worker died as a result of injuries sustained when
he was struck by the upper portion of a manhole when the chain used to
hoist it let go on a project in Toronto.
November 17, 1998 – A worker died as the result of injuries sustained
when he was struck by the bucket of an excavator and knocked into an
excavation on a sewer and water project in Windsor.
December 4, 1998 – A car struck two workers engaged in the
removal of traffic control devices on a project in Niagara. One worker was
killed and the other critically injured.
December 23, 1998 – A supervisor for a company engaged in the
installation of caissons on a project in Toronto died when he fell into
a hole for a caisson.
