Electrical Safety for Electrical Workers

(Lock Out & Tag Out and Arc Flash)

Arc Flash and Electrocution are two of the main hazards that electrical workers are exposed to on a regular basis.

The days of changing breakers, tying in circuits with a live panel and little or no PPE, are almost gone. Approximately 4 years ago the Ontario Electrical Safety Authority started a promotion of workplace safety based on NFPA 70E, which is the American Standard for electrical workplace safety. Canada has since created its on standard through CSA Z462 Workplace Electrical Safety.

Through CSA Z462 the electrical industry comprised of representatives from; labour, management, utility providers, educational facilities and government representatives, came together to create a consensus safety standard for electrical workers.

The Ontario OHSA requires employers to 'take all reasonable care to protect health and safety of their workers' Section 189 -194 of the construction regulations provides employers with requirements that will go toward protecting workers safety.
